five ways to make the holiday season brighter this year.

It's the most wonderful time of the year...but sometimes, it can be difficult to tap into all of that holiday spirit. While there are many memorable traditions to cherish and enjoy, there are also endless to-do lists and last-minute assignments at work. Striking a balance between festivities and responsibilities can be tricky. Not to worry! There are many ways to make the holiday season brighter this year. Some of the suggestions included in this post will take mere moments and others are a little more involved. Choose whatever item fits into your holiday schedule. Whether you have a few hours or a few minutes, it is always possible to embrace the spirit of the season. Here are a few ideas to get you started...

Treat Yourself to a Movie Night. Got a couple of hours in your schedule? Need a way to unwind after a long day at the office? This is the perfect time to curl up with a holiday themed movie. Instead of just pressing play on Netflix, make it a bit more of an event. Pour yourself a drink (hot chocolate is always a good idea or you can always make an adult beverage by adding a bit of peppermint schnapps to a nice cold glass of chocolate milk). Turn down the lights. Grab some cozy blankets and pillows. Put on your favourite pair of pajamas or sweatpants. Choose the Christmas movie that you love most. Really take this time to treat yourself to an at-home movie experience. Sometimes, just curling up with a familiar holiday film can be the most rewarding and wonderful treat during this busy and hectic time. Remember, you deserve moments to rest and relax.

Light a Christmas Themed Scented Candle. Short on time? That doesn't mean you need to sacrifice that warm fuzzy holiday feeling. All you need to do is light a Christmas themed candle. There are so many fabulous seasonal scents to choose from these days. Some candles are more expensive, but there are also really affordable options at stores like HomeSense, Winners, and even Michaels. (I found some incredible Gingerbread House candles at Michaels for $6 this year.) If you work from home...light a scented candle whenever you need a little extra dose of holiday cheer. Otherwise, light your scented candle when you get home from work. It take only a few seconds and can make such a notable difference.

Drive Around and Look at the Lights. There is something so special about seeing Christmas lights. It just makes you feel like a kid again! If your holiday season has been lacking a little seasonal joy...take a look outside. If you don't have a car, bundle up, and walk around the neighborhood to look at the different lights that your neighbours have put up. If you have a car, go for a little drive and see different neighbourhoods all lit up! Don't have time to add this seasonal activity to your to-do list? That's okay. You don't need to miss out, just pay attention to the different light displays on your drive home from work. Maybe out of the corner of your eye, you notice a house with a large inflatable Santa Claus or a business by the side of the highway has a festive sign hanging. Look for decorations everywhere and take a moment to appreciate their beauty.

Try Out a New Recipe. If you are someone that loves to bake or cook...this is your season. There is no better time to get creative in the kitchen. You can always make a tray of cookies and share them with friends or loved ones. Or you can cook a special dish and share the leftovers with an elderly neighbour. There are many different ways to share your talents! Sometimes, it can be difficult to find recipes that inspire. So, consider asking friends or family members for their recommendations. Or you can always scroll through social media for a little inspiration. Personally, I love to try out one new recipe each year from one of the Joanne Fluke mystery novels, because there is such a great assortment. Find what works for you and get cooking! Bonus points if you turn on some holiday music while you work and wear a Christmas themed apron.

Add Some Glitter to Your Beauty Routine. Sometimes the simplest additions can make the biggest difference. One easy way to feel more seasonal and inspired this month is to add on a little glitter. Reach for a glittery eyeshadow shade and layer it on top of your everyday makeup look. Or choose a highlight with a little extra shimmer and shine. You can also incorporate glitter into your nail looks by reaching for a glittery topcoat or adding on some sparkling decals. That extra dose of glitter will instantly boost your mood and make you feel more connected to the holiday season.

What are you waiting for? Make the month of December count. Do what you can to infuse your days with holiday themed activities. Whether you have all day long or just a few moments...there are many ways to make the season brighter.
