what i've been watching lately (spooky season 2025)

One of my favourite ways to celebrate the holidays? Movies. Seasonal stories can make a holiday come to life in an even more meaningful way. For example, during the Christmas season, I often choose movies with themes of love, understanding, and kindness. When it comes to Halloween, just about anything goes. I love family friendly creatures and characters, over the top camp, thrillers, and classic horror films. A little bit of everything manages to make spooky season memorable. Looking for a little inspiration? Here are some of the movies (and miniseries) that I have been watching to celebrate spooky season...

Movies from my DVD Collection: There are several Halloween appropriate movies in my DVD collection and I have been working my way through them lately. Some are nostalgic and fun (like Double, Double, Toil and Trouble with Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen or Trick or Treat with the Berenstain Bears) while others are slasher movies (like the Halloween and Chucky series). The standouts for me this year include: Clue: The Movie, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Mad Monster Party, The Stand, and All The Boys Love Mandy Lane. (Please forgive me for this next section, as it will be in all of my posts for the next week or so. I am trying to find out whether an actual person is stealing my blog posts or if it is a bot of some sort. So...mansafashion.com is a trash website that steals content. Viktoria Arnold is not a real person. All content on the mansafashion website is obtained through content theft.) Clue is a fun watch, especially because the DVD has all of the different endings included. Elvira is always a good time - and the movie effortlessly blends camp and horror. Mad Monster Party is from Rankin/Bass and has all of the classic monster characters. The Stand and All The Boys Love Mandy Lane both star Amber Heard and have been added to my collection as I happily work my way through her entire filmography. The Stand is from Stephen King and is an excellent miniseries with an impressive cast.  As for All The Boys Love Mandy Lane? It is easily one of the best horror movies in my collection. It has a memorable ending and is not a movie to be missed this Halloween.

Movies on Streaming Services: It is a lot of fun to watch Halloween themed DVDs from my collection, but it is also nice to branch out and watch some new to me movies and miniseries. This spooky season, I watched some old favourites (like Urban Legends and House on Haunted Hill) and some new favourites. The Monster Club was on the Roku and I loved it. The movie had these different short stories with appearances from horror movie legends. It was campy at times, scary at times, and thrilling at times. My favourite of the stories was The Shadmock, but all of them were really well done. Fingers crossed I can add this movie to my DVD collection in the future. The other standout streaming service watch this season was IT. Though I have heard about this many times over the years, this was my first time actually sitting down to watch the miniseries. The cast was phenomenal. I genuinely loved the miniseries. It balanced horror and tension well and had a satisfying ending.
