high end mascara face off (laura mercier vs benefit)

My favourite mascara is no secret. In fact, I've been pretty vocal about my obsession for Cover Girl's The Super Sizer mascara, both here and on my YouTube channel. The reason is simple: it works. That drugstore product adds tons of length, volume, and drama to the lashes. Since it is a holy grail product for me, I rarely think to try other mascaras on the market. I simply don't need to. That being said, during a Sephora VIB event a while back, two mascara samples were included in the goodie bag. One was from Laura Mercier and the other from Benefit. Find out how they perform and which one is worth the splurge...

High End Mascara Face Off: Laura Mercier

The first mascara in this high end mascara face off comes from Laura Mercier. This is the Caviar Volume mascara and it claims to thicken and add intense volume to the lashes in one bold stroke. Does it? Actually, yes. This mascara adds a wonderful amount of length and volume to the lashes. It looks wonderful when applied and one coat is really all you need. That being said, the wand is a bit clunky to use. (I personally prefer something sleeker, similar to The Super Sizer or They're Real!) This mascara would work well for an everyday look or if you want lashes with lots of look-at-me-length.

High End Mascara Face Off: Benefit

Next up is the Roller Lash mascara from Benefit. This is a brand that I have a little more experience with because I used to use their They're Real! mascara constantly. That and Dior Show were my ultimate favourites. So needless to say, I was curious to see how the Roller Lash would perform. First off, this has a really unique wand and its curved shape makes application much easier. I definitely prefer this style to the chunky Laura Mercier one. As for how the mascara performs, I was really impressed. It adds a lot of length and volume - and creates fluttery, flirty looking lashes. The fact that this makes your lashes look extra dark is also a real benefit.

High End Mascara Face Off: The Verdict

As you can see from the picture above, there are only slight differences between the two mascaras. Both perform quite well, if you ask me. However, the Benefit snags the win thanks to the excellent wand design, the added length on the lower lashes (the wand made application on the lower lashes so much easier), the darker colour, and the fluttery finish it gives the lashes. They just seem to have more movement while the Laura Mercier mascara seems somewhat stiff. Though both are quality products, Benefit is the one I would consider purchasing a full sized version of in future.

The Winner: Benefit Roller Lash

Have you tried either of these? What is your favourite high end mascara?

  5. This was a good comparison! While I've never tried the Laura Mercier one before I do love the Benefit roller lash! I got a sample of it once and had to go buy a full size one, haha!

Hope that you are having a good week :)

    1. Yes, I can fully understand why! If I'm looking for a high end mascara to mix things up (my favourite mascara ever is from Cover Girl, shockingly enough) this is one I would choose. Thank you so much!

  6. This is a great comparison, Shannon! Can't believe how much the added length on the lower lashes from the Benefit one really made a difference IMO.
My fave high end mascara will always be Chanel but man.... just can't justify paying for the price!!!
