hit or miss? testing out a dollar store highlighter

Every now and then...it is fun to put a dollar store beauty product to the test. Why? You never really know what the experience will be like. And with such a low price point, the risk is worth the reward. The latest item to test and try comes from Kozmic Colours, a brand that seems to be fairly common at dollar stores in my area. The silver highlight cost a mere $1.25. Since I have been able to find some impressive affordable highlights in the past, this seemed like a pretty safe bet. Highlights tend to be a little easier to produce at an affordable price point than eyeshadows or eyeliners! So, it is time to find out whether the Kozmic Colours Highlighter (in the shade 8) is a hit, a miss, or falls somewhere in between.

When it comes to packaging...this is exactly what you would expect from a dollar store product. It has a black plastic base and a clear cover. The plastic is extremely lightweight and flimsy. In fact, it feels downright cheap. While this doesn't exactly scream luxury, for $1.25, I don't expect it to. All that really matters is what is inside the cheap dollar store packaging. As you can see from the photo above, this is a vibrant silver highlight. Since I am a fan of highlights in all colours and intensities (the KVD Alchemist Holographic Palette is a forever favourite)...a silver highlight is intriguing. The highlight itself has a surprisingly creamy formula that is pleasant to use. This can be applied with a sponge applicator or a finger for maximum intensity. The swatch above is a prime example of just how pigmented this product can be. It is bold and over the top in the best way.

As for wearing the Kozmic Colours Highlighter on the cheeks? I decided to wear it a little more subtly. I used a fluffy brush to dust some of the product on the cheeks and the end result was a look that was glowy and metallic....but still wearable. That being said, this product could easily be worn in a more dramatic manner. It really depends on your preferences and what you envision for the makeup look. Alternatively, this highlight could easily double as a fabulous silver eyeshadow.

Rating: 4 / 5

Is it a hit or a miss? Though the Kozmic Colours Highlighter only cost $1.25, it was worth much more. The packaging was cheap and flimsy, but the product itself had impressive colour payoff and a formula that felt far more luxurious than any dollar store item has the right to. It has definitely made me curious about this ultra affordable brand. Maybe there will be another dollar store beauty try on in future featuring something else from Kozmic Colours. Stay tuned....

Have you ever tried dollar store beauty products? Were they hits or misses?
