From my first foundation purchase to my beloved The Super Sizer mascara...there is a lot to love about Cover Girl. Though their mascaras can be a little hit or miss, they are always fun to test and try out. Recently, I was able to put the Cover Girl Lash Blast Clean Waterproof Mascara to good use. It was overwhelming. Despite all of the options available...I wound up going home with a Cover Girl foundation, a single black eyeshadow, and a Lash Blast mascara. Since then? I have continued to use and enjoy a wide array of Cover Girl products. Including my all-time favourite mascara, The Super Sizer. Most recently, the Exhibitionist Uncensored Mascara entered my life. Even though I wasn't looking for a new mascara, part of me was curious about how another Cover Girl mascara would perform. Want to find out how it works? Cover Girl and I have history. This was one of the first (if not the first) makeup brands I ever tried. Over the years, there have been an awful lot of reviews on the creation of beauty is art. featuring items from this drugstore company. Why? Price point and quality. In the early days, it was because Cover Girl was a recognizable brand and my bank account was limited. As time went on, it had to do with the overall quality of products. They have continued to elevate their game. From my all-time favourite mascara, The Super Sizer to their TruNaked eyeshadow palettes...there is a lot to love. Speaking of those TruNaked palettes! Lately, I have been focused on using the makeup currently in my collection. That means less buying and more enjoying. Which is exactly what I have been doing with a handful of Cover Girl eyeshadow sets. Today, I wanted to do updated reviews of some of the TruNaked palettes and do a look or two with a few of my favourites.

Cover Girl was one of the first makeup brands I ever tried. (Not counting the days in my youth when I would dig through my mother's vanity, trying on every shade of pink lipstick I could get my eager little hands on.) My first foray into the beauty aisles saw me leave with a Cover Girl foundation, a tube of Lash Blast mascara, and an individual pan of black eyeshadow. I can still remember how amazing I felt, wearing glittery black shadow all over my lids. The pigmentation was poor and it had a dry, almost chalky consistency, but it was mine and I felt beautiful.

The brand has come a long way sine then. They've replaced their so-so shadows for higher quality alternatives. And more recently? Cover Girl has upped the game even more. I fell in love with their shadows when the TruNaked palettes were released a couple of years ago...and it seems that there is no end in sight for this drugstore staple. Their latest launch includes a range of new and exciting eyeshadow palettes including Dazed and Sunsets.

One Halloween costume that never goes out of style? 80s themed ensembles. This is one classic look that is fun to wear and easy to create. Need something last minute? Don't want to overspend on a store bought costume? Then the 80s are your best bet. All you need to do is grab the most colourful items from your wardrobe. Bonus points if you have acid wash jeans or a cute pair of mom jeans to pair with your colourful shirt or vest. Look for scrunchies, legwarmers, or lightening bolt earrings. Sometimes, it is possible to find noteworthy makeup for a whole lot less. A few months back, there were a handful of limited edition Cover Girl products at the local dollar store. Talk about exciting! I am no stranger to Cover Girl makeup. In fact, it is one of the earliest brands that I can remember purchasing. Over the years, their products have continued to wow. The standouts are definitely their mascaras (specifically The Super Sizer) and eyeshadows (the TruNaked shadows are fabulous). Another standout? The Katy Perry inspired Katy Kat line of products. This was released several years back...but for whatever reason there were some Katy Kat Palettes at the dollar store recently. It was ages ago now. But I came across some small eyeshadow palettes from Cover Girl in my local drugstore. I was both intrigued and hesitant. Intrigued because I am a sucker for drugstore eyeshadow palettes. Hesitant because I have never had much luck with Cover Girl eyeshadows. Yet for whatever reason....I found myself picking up two of the three truNaked palettes. (There are Roses, Goldens, and Nudes.) The Roses palette and Goldens palette instantly caught my eye. I just loved the colour combinations. There was a nice mixture of light and dark shades. Of glitter and shimmer finishes.

Each eyeshadow palette came with eight different eyeshadow colours. Roses included: Almond (a soft velvety cream), Champagne (a gorgeous shimmery champagne), Baby (a light mauve), Rose Gold (a super pigmented and shimmery rose gold), Copper Rose (a mid-toned mauve), Dusk (a deeper purple shade), Mauvergine (a beautiful deep mauve), and Mousse (a glittery dark purple). Then there was the Goldens palette. It had: Creme (a yellow toned cream shade), Chiffon (a golden toned shimmer), Cookie (a soft brown), Sunkissed (a gorgeous shimmery gold), Camel (a shimmery golden brown), Ginger (a copper toned brown), Ecru (a deep forest green), and Sierra (a dark brown). Here is a closer look at the two palettes in my collection....

As you can see from the pictures above....there is a really lovely variety of shades included in each eyeshadow palette. The best part? The part that totally surprised me? Just how wonderful these shadows perform. The texture is smooth, soft, and consistent. They blend well. They are highly pigmented. In short? They are a serious drugstore find. Over the last few months, I have reached for these palettes over and over again. They are great for travel, perfect if you are in a rush, or if you want to do something a little more dramatic. 

These Cover Girl truNaked palettes really inspired me. Which is why I decided to film a little daytime and nighttime look. I used the Roses palette for daytime and the Goldens palette (my personal favourite) for the evening look. You can check it all out on my YouTube channel. 

Cover Girl really impressed me. These eyeshadow palettes are truly fantastic. They are by far one of the best drugstore eyeshadow palettes in my collection. Next time you go shopping? Pick one up. Try it. Fall in love with it.

Recently, I decided to create a makeup look that was both casual and glam, using the latest items from Katy Perry and Cover Girl.

So, when it comes to Cover Girl mascaras, I am always open to trying something new from the brand, just to see how it compares to my all-time favourite. The Cover Girl Exhibitionist Stretch and Strengthen Mascara is designed to lengthen and strengthen the lashes. How does it perform? And how does it compare to The Super Sizer? The Cover Girl brand will always be nostalgic for me. I remember buying a black eyeshadow from the brand back in the Laguna Beach days and trying to mimic the makeup style of the girls on the show. I remember my first foundation purchase and the first blush that I ever tried. All Cover Girl. At that time, the brand was accessible and affordable. (Though the prices at the drugstore have increased significantly in more recent years.) Perhaps that is the reason my weakness for Cover Girl remains. It is nostalgic, but the brand also has some great products. Recently, it was the Squishy Glaze in the shade Raspberry Twist that called to me. This is described as a Lip Butter Balm and it comes in several different shades. Keep reading for a full review. 

theme week: lip products (cover girl clean fresh tinted lip balm)

Makeup has always felt powerful to me. It was a way for me to express my internal world externally. Or at least try to! Since I have always been very shy and socially anxious, discovering makeup made me feel like I had a voice. If I was a little more moody...extra black eyeshadow instantly made me feel better. If I was hopeful...a colourful blush let the whole world know. There was power in those products, in those moments of creation, and in those small expressions of self. To this day, makeup has a very special place in my heart. It matters, and sometimes, it even tells my story. Lately, I have been thinking a lot about makeup and beauty. I've read and re-read this interview, featuring a personal hero of mine, many times. Her words are so true. "Beauty is, and has always been, what you make it...Beauty can be power. You don't have to be wearing makeup to feel powerful, but my God, if red lipstick makes you feel powerful or makeup you feel a little bit more empowered that day, then it is your damn right to do so." I love this attitude and it really inspired my posts for this week.  Yes, it is time for another theme week. All of the posts on the creation of beauty is art. this week will be focused on different lip products. I guess I am looking for items that make me feel powerful and strong.. Ones that reflect all the best parts of who I am. Here goes...

first impressions: covergirl katy kat eye mascara

The easiest way to get my attention? Put the words Katy Perry on anything. Literally anything. At this point, I have her CDs, t-shirts, sunglasses, bracelets, necklaces, and lipstick. Now? I also have my very own Katy Perry mascara. It is Cover Girl's latest addition to their Katy Kat collection: Katy Kat Eye. There were a few different mascara options available. Black, Blue, as well as Waterproof versions of both. I opted for the non-waterproof black mascara. Largely because I wanted to see how the most basic version of the mascara performed. 

It promises 10x the volume and lash darkness as well as an "all day cat eye." So....how was this mascara? Let's start with the packaging and the wand. As you can see from the picture above, the packaging is super sleek and chic. It looks just like the Katy Kat Matte Lipsticks (review and swatches of those to come). White and black. Capitol letters only. Super trendy and cute. This is a mascara that definitely looks good on the outside. The wand itself is a little bit different. Instead of having a standard bristle wand, it is curved and twisted. The bristles spiral around the wand itself. 

I'll be honest. The wand itself was really intriguing to me. At this point, I have tried many different wand styles. Some with larger bristles, some with smaller ones, some with rubber bristles, and some in different designs. So as far as the mascara wand went? I hoped this one would provide a better application of product if nothing else. Sadly it did not. The spiral bristles made application on the lower lash line difficult as well as on the inner corner of my eyes. For the outer lashes? It worked well. It really did help create that cat eye effect as promised. However, overall ease of use was lacking.

Now for my overall thoughts on the Katy Kat Eye Mascara from Cover Girl. Meh. This was somewhat disappointing to me. Like I said earlier, I will buy anything and everything related to Katy Perry. Whether she is on the cover of a magazine or is putting her name on makeup. It will become a part of my collection. That being said....I would not repurchase this mascara. As I mentioned before, it was tricky to apply the product to the lower lashes and inner corner. (I have started using this on the outer corner for a more dramatic cat eye look and using The Super Sizer mascara on the rest of my lashes. The Katy Kat mascara is usable in this way, but I would rather not use two products where I could use one. Know what I mean?) In addition, this mascara was super clumpy on my lashes. Even using the smallest amount made them clump together. I like super dramatic lashes. But this was less dramatic and more clump, clump, clumpy. It took a lot of work to brush out all of the clumps. 

Here are a couple of pictures so you can see the mascara in action. Note: this is after I removed the clumps. It looks okay but it took a lot of work to get them to this state. Personally? I would much rather use something like The Super Sizer or Benefit's They're Real! mascara. 

There are a lot of great Cover Girl products. And a lot of fantastic Katy Perry products. The Cover Girl Katy Kat Eye mascara was unfortunately not one of them. The mascara was difficult to use in certain areas and ended up looking pretty clumpy. (As you can see from the picture above. Even after I combed out most of the clumps it still looks pretty clumpy in spots.) This is sadly not a mascara that I will be reaching for on a daily basis.

review: cover girl clean sensitive liquid foundation

It wasn't how I planned to test our a new foundation. My husband and I were in the middle of a backyard barbecue. My uncle (and new aunt) were celebrating their recent nuptials with hoards of family and friends nearby. The sun was shining, the birds were chirping, and the wasps were ready to sting. How do I know the last part is true? Well, I got stung. It was my first time ever being stung by anything....and it hurt. A lot. More than I ever thought it would. Once the shock of it all wore off, the water works began. I was trying not to cry in front of everyone - but wound up bawling in my husbands car. There went my not so waterproof makeup. Sigh.

Before I knew it? We were on our way to the drugstore for supplies. Something to stop the burning, itching, and pain on my arm....and a little makeup to touch up my splotchy face. They didn't have my usual drugstore foundation in stock. That in itself caused a brief moment of panic. What would I do? Which foundation would I choose? So I wound up picking the cheapest thing on the shelf. It was the Cover Girl Clean Sensitive Liquid Foundation. 

That brings me to my review. How did it work out? Pretty well, actually. Especially when you consider the $6 price tag. It comes in a glass bottle (which feels pretty darn luxurious but it actually a bit harder to use. There is no scoop, spatula, or pump. That makes it difficult to get the product out of that oh-so-cute glass bottle) with a screw off cap. The formula I chose is for sensitive skin. There were a couple of other options but none for dry skin. So sensitive skin, it was!

The shade I chose was 505 Ivory (the lightest on the shelf) and it is a pretty good match. A lot of drugstore foundations tend to run a little dark. Which means achieving a proper match can be a real struggle. Not this time! The match is pretty close to perfect. As for the coverage? That was fairly impressive as well. It provides medium coverage, blends easily, and looks natural. There weren't any noticeable dry spots or caking. Pretty impressive. Here is a picture of the foundation in use....

The Cover Girl Clean Sensitive Liquid Foundation definitely exceeded my expectations. It was super affordable and did a great job. Especially when I was in a pinch! Now? This has become my go to foundation for work. It is quick and easy to use - and looks great. What else could I possibly need?

review: cover girl jewels palette

YouTube is a big part of my life. Not only do I create my own beauty related videos but I watch a ton of them as well. When it comes to reviews, there are certain beauty gurus that I trust more than others. One example of a YouTuber I trust is emilynoel83. I have been watching her videos for years, so there is definitely a level of trust there. Which is why I was so disappointed when she gave a not-so-glowing review of the new Cover Girl truNaked Jewels palette.

This was one palette I had my eye on. The bold jewel tones looked spectacular - especially with all of that shimmer! Her review was especially upsetting since Cover Girl's  previous truNaked eyeshadow sets have become some of my all time favourite drugstore offerings. What was a beauty lover to do? Try it for myself? Skip it altogether? Decisions, decisions.

In the past, I have gone against Emily's recommendations only to find her opinion had been spot on....and I was stuck with disappointing makeup. This time? I didn't care. Even knowing I was bound to be let down, that Jewels palette was going to be mine. I was so enamored by the idea of it. that I simply had to know what it was like.

Going in, my expectations were low. Given the fact that Emily had mentioned weak pigmentation and flaky textures, I was preparing for the fall out. Literally. Turns out? There was no need. It was a happy surprise when the shadows were soft, buttery, and highly pigmented. Here is a summary of the palette.

Pros:
- Smooth texture
- Wonderful shade range and variety of finishes
- Simple and travel friendly packaging
- Great pigmentation (the only exception is that Green Amber shade)
- Easy to blend and build up colour
- The shadows have names (many drugstore palettes do not)

Cons:
- Green Amber is not as pigmented as the rest of the shadows
- $12 CDN is a little pricey for a smaller drugstore palette

Overall Rating: 4/5

Honestly, I am glad that I took the risk on this Cover Girl eyeshadow palette. This is one brand that has really stepped up their gave in terms of both quality and shade selection. I can't wait to see what they will do next!

be in it for the long haul.

There is one thing I have been trying to do less of....and that is buying makeup. I find this tremendously difficult because makeup is my biggest passion. I love trying new products, playing with colours, getting creative, and expanding my skills. Despite trying to cut back, I gave myself a drugstore splurge day a little while back. Were there new things I wanted to try? Things I had been curious about? Grab em!

As you can see from the picture above, I ended up grabbing a bunch of new things. That included the Joe Fresh Radiant Face Serum, Cover Girl Age Defying Pressed Powder, Elf Pout & Pucker Lip Set, the  the L'Oreal Eva Longoria Lipstick, Wet n' Wild Lipstick, the Cover Girl Outlast lip product, and the Maybelline Fit Me Stick Foundation (re-purchase).

Since I ended up buying a number of new products, I thought that I would make this post a haul and mini-review. Just some quick highlights on a few of the products. There will be full reviews for the Cover Girl Outlast and the Elf Pout & Pucker Lip Set in the weeks to come. Ready to get started? This is a closer look at my drugstore makeup haul.

Let's start with the skin! I have been looking at skincare products a lot lately. This is probably because I am getting married in four months....and I really want my skin to look perfect. I decided to give the Joe Fresh Radiant Face Serum a try. Largely because of the claims. Brighten, hydrate, and tone? Sounds good to me! I have been using this twice a day for the last few weeks and so far I don't notice any difference. But I am not giving up yet. I know that certain skin care products take a while before you start to notice the results. So, I am going to continue and cross my fingers.

The next part of my haul was the Cover Girl Age-Defying Pressed Powder. I know a lot of people prefer high end powders but personally I have never seen the advantage. I have really dry skin on my face and find that pressed powders tend to do more harm than good. Which is why I typically choose a drugstore powder and use it just on my nose and my under eye area. I wanted to try something different so I opted for this one. So far so good! It has surprisingly good coverage and a very silky texture. Plus, the packaging is really pretty. Bonus!

This lipstick comes from Wet n' Wild. In general I am a big fan of this brand. Their eyeshadows are the absolute best to come out of the drugstore. Hands down. Some of their other products are more hit and miss, but there was something about this shade. That soft pretty pink just called to me! It delivered on the colour. It looks absolutely beautiful. The formula itself is a bit dry sadly. I plan to layer it with a lip balm to counteract that dryness. Simple fix for a gorgeous shade.

Now to finish off this drugstore haul post! One of the other items I picked up was a lipstick from L'Oreal. They had a line of lip colours inspired by certain celebrities. The one I chose was Eva Longoria. The shade Eva's Nude was a deep nude colour that is super sexy and easy to wear. The reason I picked this? I love Eva and I loved the packaging as well. It is sleek and sultry and has a print of her signature on it. So pretty!

Overall, this drugstore haul was a major success. It was so much fun to splurge and pick up a few new things. Just as fun? Trying everything out. Nothing could be more thrilling.

Cover Girl mascaras are impressive. I've tried a handful from the brand that have wowed, including my all-time favourite, The Super Sizer. Most recently, I gave the Lash Blast Cleantopia Mascara in Ultramarine Black a try. It is described as "an intense black mascara shade with a hint of blue for brighter, wide-awake eyes." Talk about an intriguing idea. After all, I am pretty committed to black mascara, but still love the idea of having fun with colour. This particular mascara seemed like the perfect way to check off both boxes. Keep reading for all the information about this unusual drugstore beauty product.

put on some lipstick and live a little.

I have tried more than one or two lip products in  my life. The exact number? I can't even imagine. Lately I have been on a total lip colour frenzy. There is something about the arrival of spring (it's coming.....I know it is coming.....!) that is making me absolutely and completely obsessed with lipstick. New shades, new textures, new products. I can't get enough of them. During my recent drugstore haul, I decided to pick up the Cover Girl Outlast All Day Lip Colour in the shade Coral. Out of all the drugstore brands, Cover Girl is not one I have a lot from. But I decided to give this product a chance. And I am so glad that I did.

What drew me in was the all day claim. I am always looking for lip products that last. I am not the kind of girl to re-apply my lipstick throughout the day. I am more of a set it and forget it type. There is nothing I hate more than worrying that my face isn't holding up! Which is why this particular lip product was so intriguing. It came with a highly pigmented gloss and a balm to go over top. Basically, you apply the lip colour, let it sit for a full minute, and then apply the lip balm over top. Here is a closer look at the two lip products....

What surprised me the most about this lip product? That lip colour! The coral was highly pigmented, had this gorgeous sheen, and went on so smoothly. It was actually hard for me to believe that this was so affordable. I was just blown away by the rich colour and ease of use. In terms of colour and application? Absolutely wonderful. In terms of longevity? I loved it just as much. While it did not last for the "up to 24 hours" it claimed on the box, it did last. The colour stayed on my lips for about six hours without budging. That is more than enough to keep me happy! I was so so impressed with the quality. (So much so that I ended up picking up another shade from this line later on.)

Great pigmentation, a beautiful colour, smooth texture, long lasting, and easy to wear. What more could a makeup lover ask for? I was pleasantly surprised by the Cover Girl Outlast All Day Lip Colour. While it didn't last for 24 hours....it was gorgeous and had great longevity for a lip product. I absolutely love the way I feel wearing it.

rose gold inspired makeup look

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Sometimes, it is a season, a colour, or an outfit. On a recent night out? It was a rediscovered product, the Revlon PhotoReady Eye Art in Peach Prism. (That's right, I said rediscovered product. I have been digging through my makeup collection to use things I already own.) The moment I saw it, I knew. It was the perfect source of inspiration. On one end there is a gorgeous rose gold cream shadow and on the other there is a sparkly peach liner. I chose to pair these items with my beloved Urban Decay Naked 3 eyeshadow palette to create a romantic and rosy makeup look.

Products Used: Revlon PhotoReady Eye Art in Peach Prism, Urban Decay Naked 3, Flower Beauty Black Eyeliner, Cover Girl The Super Sizer mascara, Annabelle bronzer, Benefit Posetint Balm. 

How I Created The Look: 

• I started by following my normal foundation routine. I used the Maybelline Better Skin foundation (a newer addition to my collection...full review to come!) and concealer and finished it all off with my Cover Girl pressed powder. Then I filled in my brows using my Bonne Bell eyebrow pencil. I wanted everything to be super natural. That meant a super lightweight products and a subtle contour using my Annabelle bronzer.
• The focus of this makeup look was definitely the eyes. They needed to be warm but dramatic. First, I used the Revlon cream shadow as a base. Then it was time to add a little intensity with the Naked 3 palette. I applied Trick to the centre of the eyelid and blended Liar into the crease. That was buffed out using Nooner and Strange was used on the inner corner and underneath the brow bone.
• Next up was the eyeliner. I used my Flower Beauty liner to create a dramatic winged out look, added on my Cover Girl mascara, and finished off the eyes with a hint of the Revlon sparkle liner underneath the lash line. With a bit of bronzer on the cheeks and my PoseTint Balm on the lips....it was the perfect blend of subtle and dramatic. Rose gold is great that way!

my favourite mascara + FOTD

For a long time, the main mascara in my life was Benefit's They're Real. And every now and then, Too Faced's Better Than Sex. While I still enjoy all three of these high-end options....they are no longer at the top of my list. My post today will highlight my current favourite mascara (which I recently re-purchased for the millionth time) and showcase a recent makeup look that I created for a casual night out.
