how often should you clean your makeup brushes?

A girl can never have too many makeup brushes. Or at least, that is what I thought. Until I actually sat down to clean them all. It took forever. I stood at my bathroom sink, surrounded by crease brushes, fan brushes, stippling brushes, and foundation brushes in every shape size and colour imaginable. It was then that I realized: I probably should clean these more often.

This is a beauty trap many makeup lovers fall into. Having tons of different brushes to choose from means we often clean them less frequently than we should. Don’t have a massive brush collection? It can still be a major pain to scrub, soak, and dry. Which is why one of the most common beauty mistakes is failing to clean your brushes. Put those days behind you! It is time to find out the why, when, and how of cleaning your makeup brushes.

Why You Should Clean Your Makeup Brushes. Okay, let’s start with the biggie: why. That eyeshadow brush might look clean (no previously worn eyeshadow on the bristles) but that doesn’t mean it is. Our makeup brushes touch our faces on a regular basis. That means oily spots, dry spots, blemishes, and so on. Bacteria and dirt can form on your brushes over time. If you continue to use them, it can affect the health and overall appearance of your skin. Removing dirt and bacteria from your brushes reduces the spread of pimples, improve your skin, and prevent eye infections.

When You Should Clean Your Makeup Brushes. There is no doubt about it. Cleaning your makeup brushes is a must. While opinions vary on the topic, most experts agree that once a week is ideal. Give your brushes a deep clean once every week – and spray your brushes with brush cleaner every other day to remove surface dirt. Something to keep in mind? Listen to your skin! If you are breaking out more than usual, try washing your brushes more often.

How To Wash Your Makeup Brushes. Ready to get cleaning? There are a few ways to go about it. For that quick every other day clean, grab a brush cleaner from your local beauty supply store. Spray directly onto the bristles and wipe onto a paper towel. This will give your brushes a good surface clean. For a deeper clean, keep it simple. Soak your brushes in warm soapy water for a few minutes. Then rinse and wipe with a paper towel. Lie your brushes flat to dry to keep the bristles in place.

Brush cleaning made simple! Now that you know the why, when, and how...add clean makeup brushes to your to-do list.
