halloween costumes: to trend or not to trend?

It’s a serious question. One that is probably weighing heavy on your mind right this very minute…should you go trendy with your Halloween costume? Maybe in the past you regretted the Tan Mom ensemble you put together or wish that you hadn’t dressed up as VMA Miley Cyrus. Trendy costumes are without a doubt funny and they tend to go over well at Halloween parties. Unfortunately, looking back on those costumes doesn’t always fill your heart with joy. Before you put the finishing touches on your Halloween costume this year, it is time to take a closer look at trendy costumes: the pros and the cons.

Pro: Trendy Costumes Are Great Conversation Starters

Few costumes are better conversation starters then ones that are on trend. Whether you are out and about in a Venom inspired costume or you show up dressed as the latest Snapchat filter, fellow pop culture fans will likely rush to compliment you on your costume. This in turn can lead to conversation – and help you get to know new people. Great! Trendy costumes that are a little more on the comical side (like a Nicki Minaj vs. Cardi B costume, complete with a shoe to throw) are sure to entertain fellow party goers, guests, and friends. This can add plenty of excitement to the evening.

Con: You May Regret Your Costume Later On

With social media everywhere these days, your Halloween costume won’t be easily forgotten. Once you (or someone else) uploads a picture from the evening, it continues to live on. That includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and everything in between. While your trendy costume may seem clever right now…. it might not seem that way in a few years time. So, if you are choosing to wear something trendy, remember that you are making a real commitment to the costume. You never know when a picture of your Snooki poof might pop up in your memories.

Pro: Trendy Costumes Can Be A Lot of Fun

Halloween is all about letting loose and having fun. Life doesn’t always have to be so serious! One of the best things about this time of year is being able to throw on a silly costume and let off some steam with a few of your closest friends. This is where trendy costumes come in handy. They can be a fun way to express the sillier side of your personality. This in turn can help you enjoy the evening – and make sure that your friends and family get a kick out of your costume as well. Have a little fun with your look. After all, that is what the holiday is all about.

Con: Your Trendy Costume May Not Suit Your Personality

It is all well and good to love the latest song from Shawn Mendes. It is quite another to walk around with a guitar all evening long. The key to wearing a trendy costume successfully is to find one that suits your personality. Don’t just pick a singer you like one song by or choose a character from a movie your significant other likes. Think about your long-term likes and interests. Say you’ve been a fan of Kelly Clarkson for the last decade. With her judging spot on The Voice, dressing up like Kelly would be considered trendy…but it would combine a trendy element with a longer commitment. Make sense? Think about characters, singers, or actors that have been around for a long time and then choose an updated version as your trendy costume.

Should you go trendy with your Halloween costume? Weigh the pros and cons. Once you actually give some thought to your costume, you will be able to determine whether you want something flashier or go with a costume that is tried and true.

  4. The unicorn costume looks really cute! But for me I wouldn't dress like that on Halloween, in my opinion I'd go cute in Carnival but not in Halloween. I preffer to go with a scary costume and just have fun being spooky, not trendy ^^
