what i've been watching this spooky season (2026)

Holidays can be a lot of fun, especially when time is set aside for movies and seasonal specials. This spooky season, there have been all sorts of mysteries, thrills, and chills making the holiday memorable. This post is dedicated to some of the standouts. It includes several items from my DVD collection as well as a handful of streaming musts that can be added to your watch list.

DVD Collection Favourites. Thank goodness for physical media. I love being able to enjoy some of my favourite movies and television shows at any given moment. This spooky season, the standouts are varied. For instance, there are family friendly options like Casper and Double Double Toil and Trouble. There are also thrilling miniseries like The Lizzie Borden Chronicles (starring the incredible Christina Ricci) and The Stand, which is a Stephen King adaptation. I have also been loving horror movies like The Ward and All The Boys Love Mandy Lane (both of which star the wonderful Amber Heard). In addition, I have been watching Murder She Wrote episodes and all sorts of Hallmark movies, like the Garage Sale Mystery collection and various Ruby Herring Mysteries. It is such a treat to watch favourites from my own collection during this time of year.

Old and New Streaming Favourites. In addition to the Halloween essentials in my DVD collection, there are also several standouts on various streaming services. Some examples include Campfire Tales on Roku, which had a powerful and unexpected ending, Freaky Stories on Tubi, which is a classic urban legends show from the 90s, various Goosebumps episodes on YouTube, and an incredible made for TV movie from 1985 called The Midnight Hour, which is also on YouTube. On Disney+, there is the Villains Grove Ambiance at Oogie Boogie Bash, which is essentially a spooky background video. It is great to have on while reading a book or tackling some tasks around the home. Finishing off this spooky season list are a few items from Netflix, including the cartoon classic, Alvin and the Chipmunks meet Frankenstein, and several seasons of The Twilight Zone. It has been wonderful enjoying familiar favourites on different streaming platforms and discovering some new-to-me musts.
