drugstore lip product try on (marcelle, revlon, and elf)

Drugstore beauty products will always have a special place in my heart. I still remember scanning the aisles back in the day and wondering what items might work for me. As my makeup collection grew, I developed a better understanding of what brands I liked and what brands tended to be so-so. Though I do not spend nearly as much time browsing the drugstore aisles as I used to...it is nice to test out different items now and then. Here are mini reviews of lip products from Marcelle, Revlon, and elf.

Marcelle - Lip Loving Matte Comfort Liquid Lipstick in Rustic Rose. The first product in this try on comes from a Canadian beauty brand, Marcelle. (In case you missed my previous post about Quo Beauty, it is my intention to focus on incorporating more Canadian products when possible.) This Lip Loving Matte Comfort Liquid Lipstick comes in an aesthetically pleasing frosted tube. There are eight different colours in this line of liquid lipsticks, but it is the shade Rustic Rose that stood out to me. This is a dusty rose colour with a hint of brown. It is a warm colour that pairs well with a lot of different makeup looks. The liquid lipstick is easy to apply, richly pigmented, and dries down completely. Some liquid lipsticks can be uncomfortable, but this is a formula that provides a nice amount of hydration. This is a comfortable drugstore lip product in a fabulous colour.

Revlon - ColorStay Limitless Matte in Manifest. Next is the ColorStay Limitless Matte liquid lipstick. There are all sorts of colours available, but this warm berry colour caught my eye. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the liquid lipstick looks like a berry colour...the actual shade is much darker than anticipated. I actually think the colour looks nice in person and photographs well, but it wasn't quite what I had in mind. (Why do makeup companies often struggle to accurately represent the product colour on the packaging? It is very frustrating.) This Revlon lip product is pigmented, easy to apply, and has a dramatic finish. The formula is a bit drying and feels a lot better with a lip balm added over top. All in all, I have mixed feelings about this drugstore product. While it looks nice, the formula isn't as hydrating as it could be and the colour was not exactly what I expected.

Elf - Glow Reviver Lip Oil in Crystal Clear. Finishing out the mini reviews is a lip oil from elf. Since I have been head over heels in love with the lip oils from ColourPop lately (the Team Jacob lip oil remains my makeup obsession) it made me wonder how a drugstore offering compared. The Glow Reviver Lip Oil comes in many different tints, but it seemed appropriate to start with Crystal Clear. This has a large applicator, which I like, but it also has a strong minty scent, which I do not like so much. The lip oil has a thick formula and it certainly adds a nice level of hydration and shine. However, my preference is still the ColourPop lip oils because of the formula, overall comfort level, and the scent. At least now I know that not all lip oils are created equally.

Have you tried any of these drugstore lip products? What drugstore brands are your favourites?

  1. I really enjoyed reading your honest take on these drugstore gems—it brought back memories of my own early makeup finds. Your thoughts on formula and finish make me want to give Marcelle a try, and I completely agree—accurate packaging shades matter so much.
